Don’t Push the River; It Flows by Itself

Today was lovely—brilliant sun on yesterday’s snowfall, still fresh and untrodden. Knitting a sweater for Afghans for Afghans, while drinking eggnog and listening to Christmas carols—my son-in-law is from Hawaii and we traded Yuletide cd’s this year. He got Susan and I got slack-key guitar. Such positive feelings that I did not want to come back and deal with the negative past. It won’t go away, but you can leave it a little wiser.

I’ll be wandering all over the map here, but there are a number of themes that keep popping up like detours on the road. Undue influence. Branding. Crowd control. Spin. From the first meeting with some of the staff of the susan-boyle forum regarding the purchase of the site, these were evident. “DJG’ers” were branded as evil. Members were an unruly mob that could not be trusted to vote for board members. “I don’t want that sword hanging over my head”, said one admin. Only the existing staff, and later, maybe a few hand-picked followers, were capable of running the site. (In point of fact, for at least a month after the site was purchased, the only person capable of keeping the site running was lchris. The previous owner had not trained even the admins in the technical aspects. lchris trained them.) And the admin on the official Sony site should be an admin on the forum, to make sure the corporate message was adhered to.

Lchris and I were a bit out of place in that milieu. We came in with the naive idealism that the site could be run by fans for fans as a democratic, non-profit enterprise. We were met with one admin’s idea of a private corporation with shares owned by the staff, and total control invested in them. This was, and still is, the basis for the “power struggle” within that site—those who wanted a site run by and for fans, with all the mess that might entail, & those who wanted tight control over that site, in accordance with the interests of Sony & Susan’s management. In return for adherence to those standards, the staff would have limited direct access to Susan, to be doled out to members.

Under normal circumstances this might have been workable, if occasionally uncomfortable for those most interested in free speech. However, this shaky collaboration between these 2 opposing points of view came under attack by our vicious cyber-stalker/cyber-bully whom I call the dementor. He is an expert at locating the weak points of his victims, and striking there. He apparently convinced the staff that lchris and I did not represent the members as a whole, but were only interested in power for ourselves, which we planned to wrest from the existing staff. Since it seems that at least some of the existing staff were so invested in retaining power & control for themselves, it was easy to convince them that we (and the “DJG’ers”) wanted the same thing. Therefore we needed to be stopped at all costs, and the uproar on July 18 ensued.

Back to the title. The music industry has been accused of “manufacturing” so-called talent, and of manipulating the buying public into supporting these instant stars. The outrage among musicians not in the corporate limelight reached a peak last year with the movement to make Rage Against the Machine the #1 Christmas single in the UK rather than the usual winner from the X-Factor. Joe McElderry (sp?) a nice young man with a pleasant voice, didn’t get #1, and I guess they proved a point, but so what? The corporate music factory keeps on running.

My point is that Susan doesn’t need branding, undue influence, crowd control (well, maybe when fans get too demanding in asking for hugs) or spin, to be wildly successful. She is a force of nature, like a river. What you see is what you get. She isn’t manufactured and neither is her fans’ love for her. Trying to make a website into a mouthpiece for corporate control isn’t necessary. We might comment on or even criticize her musical choices, her hair style, her clothes, her weight, or even her preferences in men, but it’s like doing the same to one of our beloved family members. We want her to be the best singer and the happiest person that she can be, and we don’t need any P.R. person telling us how to behave. We’re responsible for her success, not any marketing scheme. And when someone attacks our members, as the dementor has, the corporate entities either need to cooperate or get out of our way while we protect one another.

Susan and her fans are unique. We are changing the music industry organically, spontaneously. The industry powers and pundits have a choice: go with the flow or be left high and dry. And that includes websites.

  1. This is interesting. First of all, I don't know of anyone from DJG's that wanted to take over Paul's forum to bid on it and there wouldn't be enough members from that forum to sway enough votes to get anyone in office. It sounds like some Admin and mods were so paranoid they would dream up any scenario to make sure they got what they wanted. If I understand this right the reasoning of the Admin, mods, and so called staff is paranoid at best.

  2. Another excellent piece of writing, Dyebat. I cannot speak for anyone else but you've really got a knack for hitting the nail on the head and pulling no punches. I was a member of the original said fansite within a week and have watched the whole scene. I also happen to be a DJGer and have found a wonderful, enlightened group of loving fans and a source of humour, support and generosity beyond belief.

After finally reading Susan's book which gives a wonderful insight into her journey so far, I cannot help but think she would love DJG's humour forum. I could be wrong and it could be my own projection but ... ???

It is sad what the S-B fansite has become: boring, controlled, sucky-uppy and generally not a fun or entertaining place to be. I do occasionally still go in but leave rather quickly as it is so dull. I head straight back to a few other fansites I belong to, including DJG's.

It's 2010 and nearly 2011 - surely to goodness this whole level of control should be seen for what it is - it is forced, undemocratic and very uncomfortable. It's time that S-B forum woke up to what the majority of the FANS want and not the few [getting fewer] who seem to obsequiously keep on posting "love and light" but are far-removed from the reality of the real public.

Thanks Dyebat and Lchris [and others] for your continued commitment to transparency and freedom!!!

  3. The admin of the forum under estimates the intelligence of it's members, hence they have driven Susan's fans away,or perhaps is that their intention? Odd,is it not. Every action has a reaction, a policy that only allows for one mantra ,namely "All hale Susan" is boring and will only repel not attract.

  4. Dyebat this is an excellent post. I feel the industry is underestimating the fan base. I personally am offended being manipulated by a corporate entity in a oppressive way. I truly resent that.

  5. Well, none of this comes as any surprise to me vis a vis the real power struggle and access to Susan issues. These admins should be ashamed of themselves. At bare minumum, they need to get themselves some real lives - desperately.

No, Susan needs no branding. Ironically, the branding she's receiving at the hands of forum.susan-boyle. com totally limits her and stands to do her more harm than good.

  6. Once again you have proven that 'all who wander are not lost'. What a sad thing for Susan to be so manipulated this way. I can't help but wonder how much longer this situation can go on before it appears as though Susan is part of it.

  7. I am offended by this statement from the SHFII Board!

"6. The board has taken the view that there are a small number of members who post only on contentious matters, and who rarely if ever post about Susan . They come to the forum only to resurrect past issues. The board will direct the staff to delete any posts which continue to disrupt the forum in this manner, and if necessary to terminate the membership of habitual offenders."
Just who is the Judge and Jury that decides whether a post is contentious? Did the same Board approve of Canadian Bill's thread that violated many rules, and he did it with Board Approval.

This rule is a rule that should not appear at all because it is the easy way out when you do not want to deal with important matters.

  8. It is a sad commentary that Sony would help in the engineering of the fan site in order to only get a distorted view of her fan base. I would think they would want to get a TRUE picture of that base inorder to determine the best marketing strategy for Susan. Instead, what they now have is a fan base that only represents what is basically an ultra-conservative religious point of view made up approximately much older women. The end result being funereal, church-like religious music! So marketing is based upon the desires of this group of approximately 150 women. Oh, and excuse me, I forgot to add that there are about 5 to 10 men in that group. To the administration I say, SHAME ON YOU for two things. One, for allowing this to happen; and, two, for allowing the site to become a "bully" pulpit; bullying those that do not agree with your scenario. On Susan's fansite no less!! A woman who has faced tremendous bullying most of her life! You will reap what you sow!!! fudgemeister

  9. All rules do not apply to all members or past members at S-B fansite. How does one member that the Admin and the board and mods know has four user names be allowed to continue being on that fan site at times harassing other members in postings and allowed to remain as a member while others receive suspensions or bannings for very minor things that have very little meaning. Fairness is not the rule
there and more than apologies are warranted to several members and ex members. These Admin/ board/mod actions are unacceptable to many.

  10. I agree with Whisper when she said, "I personally am offended being manipulated by a corporate entity in an oppressive way." Why should Sony be involved with the OF site at all?!? ALL of the fan members need to know that the Admin. wanted to own all of the shares to the site when the ownership was for sale. Does posting on this current site mean that nothing will ever be discussed again on the OF concerning how the fans have been manipulated? Also, when will we hear more from Chris, the progress of the investigation, the names of ALL those involved in the mischief, and how they will be reprimanded?

  11. Dyebat, You write like Susan sings. With truth and heart. lchris

  12. That does it. Lchris was the best thing that place had going for it and here she is unceremoniously dumped. Who's calling the shots there? If it is the 'corporate entities' you refer to here dyebat, you deserve much kudos for publicising this. If we want to frequent a sanitised official site that option is already open. We know what to expect there without deceit. Wake up fans if you haven't already. There are other sites where the real Susan is respected and honoured for what she is. May these proliferate.

  13. Every time you post more of what happened last summer, you confirm what I thought was the real goal of some of the staff.

  14. After what has happened to LChris and CL I am hoping Dyebat and LChris will set up their own forum. I know many would join it as soon as it would be up and running. :)

  15. As a long time fan of Susan from the very first days of the original chatroom I have stayed away from the site controlled by the dreadful PT and the cronies for many months.

CL, Lchris and Dyebat have NEVER been playing with a full deck of cards. This is how the "staff" controlled the site. The "staff" have ensured that these three ladies NEVER had the full information.

The "staff" and their Praetorian Guard appear to control access to Susan to a select few. How have they managed to do this? Why have members allowed it?

It appears that nothing at all has been learned in the past year or so. Do you remember the treatment of Luz, Lady G and Paulie?

The three ladies under attack now are suffering a much worse fate. It is truly death by a thousand cuts.

I wonder what it will take to expose the bullies who control others by PM's and goodness what other psychological tricks.

Do you really want to be part of a fractured on line community that condones such bullying?

  16. Just heard the news that Dyebat, lChris and CL have resigned from S-B forum effective Dec 10, 2010.I hope now Dyebat will form a new Susan Boyle forum for those who would like to join which includes me. I support all three.
